School Dinners

Cost per dinner: £2.50

School dinners are prepared in-house by our fabulous cook Anna. Anna is a very talented chef, she cooks nearly all of the meals & deserts from scratch to ensure that the children get a healthy school dinner.

Anna prepares the school lunch menu taking into account the government guidelines for a healthy, nutritional & balanced school lunch. All religious or dietary needs can be catered for. Most children in the school choose to have a school dinner, but packed lunches from home are also welcomed. We also hold a hygiene rating of 5.

Anna takes the time to get to know the children at lunch time, knowing what they do and don’t like, she encourages children to try new food and to eat their vegetables! She adapts meals to maximise enjoyment, and is always happy to make an alternative baguette or jacket potato (this needs to be arranged in advance).

The lunch experience at Calthwaite is a lovely environment where the children enjoy eating with their peers. We do two sittings to help reduce the noise levels in the hall, the first at 12 and the second at 12:30. The older children help to serve and cut up the food for the younger children, they encourage them to eat their lunch if they are struggling. All pupils help to set up before lunch and clear the tables before heading out to play. The lunch time helps the children to develop friendships with pupils from other classes and as the children grow and move up through the school they, in turn, will flourish in the role of helping the younger pupils.

The menu’s for lunches are sent out every 3-4 weeks, we also put a copy on the school website School Dinners - Calthwaite Primary School - Cultivate, Inspire, Flourish

Years R/ 1 and 2 are entitled to universal infant free school meals. Once the children reach year 3 the cost of a school dinner is £2.50. Anna helps us to keep this cost down by ‘cooking from scratch’.

We recognise how important fruit and vegetables are to children, so as a school we pay for all pupils to be given fruit each morning as a healthy snack, we also offer milk at snack time. Milk is free for all children in class one, for older children the cost of milk is 22p per day.
